The Colorado ENA Injury prevention committee is coordinating a statewide seat belt awareness campaign in conjunction with the Colorado Department of Transportation's "Click it or Ticket™" campaign. Emergency nurses are constantly faced with the consequences of unrestrained motor vehicle travelers. We are very much aware of the devastation and life changing events which occur as a result of motor vehicle crashes. We also know that many of the injuries we take care of may have been prevented had the persons involved been restrained appropriately.  As one of the most trusted professions, we have an opportunity to provide information and education to those we care for in the Emergency department.  We would like to provide a unified message from our ENA members across the state.  So we are asking for your help in doing this.  Here is how you can help!

What:  Statewide distribution of educational materials about seat belt use for 1 week to all patients discharged from EDs across the state.
Where: All EDs in Colorado
When: "Click it or Ticket™" campaign is during May and early June. We would pick one week during the campaign.
How: We are seeking liaisons from across the state to assist us in this project. All materials would be provided through Colorado ENA.  Each liaison would facilitate the project in their ED.  If interested in being a liaison for your ED please contact Vicky Cassabaum by April 1, 2009
Why: As a trusted professional we have a unique opportunity to educate our communities about seat belt use and encourage people to use them. Seat Belts do save lives and we can potentially encourage people to wear them. There is strength in numbers and together WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Thank you,
Vicky Cassabaum RN

What is EN CARE?
EN CARE is the injury prevention institute of the Emergency Nurses Association. With more than 23,000 members worldwide, ENA is the foremost emergency nursing association in the world. EN CARE and ENA are committed to reducing the number of preventable injuries through public education.

What is the  Institute for Injury Prevention?
As a leader in the field of injury prevention, the Institute for Injury Prevention (IIP) provides professional training and develops up-to-date programs and resource materials to educate the young, the adult, and the mature adult communities. More than 5,000 emergency nurses, EMTs, and law enforcement officers have been trained to teach our injury prevention programs in their local communities across the nation and the world.

HOW DO I GET STARTED?
You can become an injury prevention provider by completing one of the four-hour training courses periodically offered in your state. To locate a training course near you or for more information on activities in your area, contact your State Injury Prevention Chairperson (EIC) - Vicky Cassabaum

The Institute for Injury Prevention training course includes information on basic injury prevention and safety, risks of alcohol and substance use/abuse, healthy aging, and Institute policies and procedures. It also includes an introduction to the injury prevention programs offered through the Institute. After becoming a trained provider, you are equipped to present our injury prevention programs to the public. IIP programs are presented to more than 300,000 people a year. The more people we reach, the more injuries and deaths we can prevent.

If you are providing Injury prevention presentations to your community - CONGRATULATIONS!  You are an  ENCARE provider! We need to hear from you! We are charged with providing National ENA our data of programs presented in our state by our membership.

Why Report your activities?
By reporting our state data to National ENA-- ENCARE has opportunities to show what the institute is doing and seek grants and other opportunities to pass on to its membership to help with your programs

How do I report my activities?
